A wild elephant stunned locals as it wandered into the town of Barobisha in West Bengal, India, after journeying from the nearby Chilapata forest.

The elephant’s sudden appearance created a two-hour traffic snarl and startled market vendors, who quickly shut down their shops to avoid the rampaging animal.

Witnesses reported that the elephant damaged a traders’ association building and the wall of a local house as it made its way through Laskor Para before reaching Barobisha’s bustling weekly market, where around 500 shops operate.

Bablu Saha, a trader, shared, “The animal walked through and damaged the boundary wall of a hall… then moved to the main weekly market, where shopkeepers shut down and fled.”

As the elephant neared the highway, crowds of thousands began following it, prompting local police to step in to manage the situation, according to reports from The Siliguri Times.

After about five hours, wildlife officers safely guided the elephant back to the Marakhata forest nearby.
