Toad, a German Shorthaired Pointer from Kuna, Idaho, had an unexpected and dangerous encounter near his home. While roaming outdoors, Toad came across a rattlesnake which bit him five times.
Recalling the incident, Toad’s owner, Fritz Brownell, described the chaotic scene to KTVB. He said he saw the snake flipping through the air before realizing the gravity of the situation—there were multiple snakes around. In a bid to protect Toad, Brownell inadvertently found himself between the snake and the dog, leading to a tough challenge.
Racing against time, Toad’s owners quickly took him to a veterinarian. The rattlesnake’s venom had already started to take effect, causing Toad to bleed from his lips and gums. The vets promptly identified several bites on his face and his front left leg, causing significant swelling. They administered an anti-venom injection, crucial for Toad’s recovery.
At first, there were fears for Toad’s survival, but he fortunately pulled through, much to the relief of his concerned family.
As Toad continues to recover, his owners are using their experience to remind other pet owners to stay vigilant in areas where rattlesnakes might be present. They emphasize the importance of keeping pets on leashes when walking in places like foothills or deserts, a sentiment echoed by Idaho Fish and Game. This precaution can help prevent similar incidents and ensure pets remain safe in environments where these snakes are prevalent.
