A neglected dog named Seamus was found wandering alone in New York City, desperately needing help.

This underweight pup, weighing only 22 pounds when he should have been around 45 pounds, was quickly taken to Manhattan Animal Care & Control.

The staff at North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, New York, couldn’t ignore Seamus’s dire situation.

His frail condition and visible injuries necessitated immediate medical care, nourishment, and tenderness to give him a chance at survival.

Dr. Deana Merino, the medical director at North Shore Animal League, was deeply affected when she first saw Seamus. His body was covered in open wounds and sores, signs of extreme neglect.

“Seeing him was heartbreaking. He could hardly move, and it was infuriating to think that anyone could let this happen,” Merino shared with PEOPLE.

Dr. Gerard Laheney, a supervising veterinarian who has worked in rescue for over 20 years, also examined Seamus. Despite finding anemia through blood tests, there were no other illnesses; Seamus had simply been starved and abandoned.

Even in his weak state, Seamus showed gentle gratitude toward his rescuers. They made him comfortable on a soft bed, reassuring him with gentle voices and touches.

His response, a weak wag of his tail and a light in his eyes, signaled that he knew he was finally safe.

Touched by Seamus’s enduring spirit, Merino decided to foster him at home, ensuring he received the best care and attention.

“With my medical training, I can help him gain weight, feed him properly, and give him the love he deserves,” Merino explained.

With careful supervision, Seamus was given a high-protein diet, carefully portioned to strengthen him without strain. As time passed, his energy increased, his anemia improved, and his eyes began to sparkle once more.

Once fully recovered, Seamus will be neutered and prepared for adoption. Though he’s still regaining his stamina, he’s already enthusiastic about joining Merino’s pack on walks, eager to play and socialize.

Seamus’s journey is a testament to resilience and the healing power of compassion. Merino is confident he will be a wonderful addition to a forever family, one who will appreciate his gentle nature and loving heart.

This inspiring dog’s determination serves as a compelling reminder of how kindness and care can mend even the toughest wounds.
