In late November, the Wright Way Rescue in North Memphis welcomed a dog named Nina under heart-wrenching circumstances.
Rescued from a cruelty case, Nina arrived at the shelter bearing a massive 13-pound tumor on her abdomen, along with two smaller tumors on her left mammary chain.
Nina was in critical condition. Severely underweight and debilitated by long-term malnutrition, she battled a relentless fever, a clear indicator of infection and stress on her body.
The sight of her painful skin infection, spreading across her hindquarters and tail, was yet another testimony to the prolonged neglect she had endured.
Preparing Nina for surgery required utmost care and precision. The risk of the largest tumor rupturing increased every day, making the situation even more urgent.
The veterinary team faced a race against time, tasked with stabilizing Nina while ensuring she was fit enough for the operation. Each movement needed careful consideration, as any undue pressure could become a medical emergency.
In this delicate scenario, the team focused on detailed tests and pre-surgical preparations. It was vital to fortify Nina’s health to endure the anesthesia, prompting efforts to enhance her weight and condition.
The surgery carried the risk of substantial blood loss and a higher-than-normal chance of fatality, but the team’s meticulous efforts paid off.
On December 8th, Nina underwent her crucial surgery, successfully overcoming the odds. Afterward, she was placed with one of Wright Way Rescue’s dedicated medical foster families, where she began to flourish in a nurturing environment.
Post-surgery analysis showed promising results. The smaller tumors were benign, while the larger one was diagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma.
Despite the uphill battle, Nina’s situation is now remarkably optimistic. Her strength is returning, her wounds are healing, and her spirit, dulled by past suffering, is rekindling. With every day, she moves closer to a full recovery.
The hope is not only for her to heal completely but also to find a loving, permanent home where she can experience the safety and affection she so greatly deserves.
For the present, Nina basks in an atmosphere of love and care, advancing steadily towards a promising future.
