When the staff at Furgiven Animal Sanctuary in West Memphis, Arkansas, arrived at work, they immediately noticed an abandoned crate by the roadside.

Concerned about what they might find, they quickly checked their security cameras to understand what had happened overnight.

The footage revealed that two small puppies were left in the crate at around 2:30 a.m. by someone unknown. The team quickly began searching the area, hoping the puppies were still close.

Unfortunately, their search came up empty, and their concern grew as time passed without a sign of the young dogs.

Lee Ridings, the sanctuary’s Director and Co-founder, speculated that the puppies were left at the sanctuary because other local rescue groups were likely at capacity.

“I think they were abandoned in the middle of the night because most shelters around here are full,” he explained. Ridings also suspected the dogs might be from an unexpected litter.

The sanctuary staff were heartbroken when they saw the conditions the puppies had endured. “Being left out in the heat next to a busy road was dangerous.

Their crate was placed less than a foot from the road and it had no bottom—just roofing shingles lining it,” Ridings described.

Fortunately, later that morning, the two puppies returned to the spot where they had been left. Although nervous and barking fearfully as the staff approached, the pups’ return was a relief to the worried team.

The puppies were understandably hesitant, their trust clearly shaken.

The sanctuary team knew they had to act carefully to prevent the pups from running into traffic. Using quiet voices and offering treats, they patiently worked to earn their trust.

Gradually, their efforts paid off. The male puppy, whom they named Dell, grew comfortable enough to eat from their hands and was eventually leashed.

His sister, later named Brynn, was more cautious. She wouldn’t allow anyone close to her and backed away when approached.

Understanding she needed time, the staff placed food inside the crate and watched from afar. After several moments of tense waiting, Brynn entered the crate and was safely secured.

Once inside the sanctuary, both puppies were immediately taken to the veterinarian. Although they were underweight and stressed, they were, thankfully, in good health.

With time and care, Dell and Brynn began to relax and their personalities soon shined through. They went from being frightened puppies to affectionate companions who now greet the staff with wagging tails and warm snuggles.

Known for their love of cuddling, Dell and Brynn are now awaiting adoption into loving homes where they will be cherished for life. The staff at the sanctuary hope these pups find families who will never abandon them again.
