One man’s quick thinking and timely actions proved life-saving for a dog in distress near a highway in Independence, Missouri.
David Fredman, on his way to work, noticed something unusual as he drove near the I-70 bridge: a dog dangling precariously from what appeared to be an electrical box. Fredman recounted to Fox4 KC, “I saw a dog hanging, seemingly strangled by a cord. Its feet barely touched the ground as it struggled to breathe.”
Reacting swiftly, Fredman dialed 911 before using a knife to free the dog from its entangled plight. Once the dog was cut loose, it showed signs of labored breathing and was unable to walk, prompting Fredman to transport it to KC Pet Project for care. There, the dog, named Max, was identified through a microchip. It turned out Max’s owner, Dee Vaughn, had been searching desperately for his missing 16-year-old pet. Vaughn was overjoyed to learn of Max’s recovery just two hours after he went missing, but heartbroken by the ordeal the elderly dog had endured.
The mystery of how Max ended up in such a dire situation remains unresolved. Whether it was a tragic accident or a deliberate act is unclear. Vaughn suspects Max, due to his age, couldn’t have wandered off that far by himself. He expressed hope that security camera footage might shed light on the incident, labeling the electrical cord around Max’s neck as highly suspicious. Vaughn mentioned notifying the police and intends to follow up with animal control.
Despite the unsettling circumstances, Vaughn is relieved that Max is safe. When he finally met Fredman, he expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Thank you, David, very much. You stopped your day to save my dog’s life.”
