On a chilly Valentine’s Day in Missouri, volunteers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) encountered a 2-year-old pit bull tethered to a dog house. With temperatures in the single digits and snow all around, they didn’t hesitate to help her.
The pit bull, unbeknownst to the rescuers, was hiding an unexpected surprise inside her shelter.

As Donna Lochmann and her team approached the small dog house, they found a litter of puppies nestled under their mother’s care. It became clear that this dog, later named Galentine, had been living outdoors and had given birth there. Their initial plan to save one dog quickly expanded to a mission to rescue seven lives.
After coaxing Galentine out, the team carefully transported the puppies to their vehicle. Recognizing the potential risk in separating a mother from her pups, Galentine appeared to trust her rescuers, allowing them to unchain her and carry her to their car.

Recalling the rescue, Natalie Thomson, SRSL’s chief communications officer, shared with The Dodo, “She climbed on our laps in the Jeep and jumped in the back to smell her babies and make sure they were all accounted for. It was the first time they were ever warm in their lives, so they all fell asleep almost immediately.”
During the ride to SRSL headquarters, Galentine seemed relieved, knowing her pups were finally safe from the cold. The rescuers celebrated alongside her.

“Today, we had a huge win,” SRSL announced on Facebook. “We were able to get her and all her babies!”
At the shelter, Galentine and her puppies, now named Serenade, Cherish, Flirt, Arrow, Amour, and Adore, settled into a cozy environment filled with plush blankets and ample food. The grateful mother thrived on the attention, happy to receive love and care from the staff.

“She is attention-starved and just wants to climb in our laps and kiss our hands,” SRSL noted. “She is sooo grateful. What a good mom.”
Over the following weeks, Galentine’s puppies grew healthy and strong under her care. She devotedly nursed them until they were ready to eat solid food. Once prepared, the puppies began seeking forever homes through adoption applications.

Galentine’s own dream came true just before St. Patrick’s Day. During a weekend adoption event, a family fell in love with her, and she found her permanent home.
“We held a big adoption event on Sunday, and she found her forever family!” Thomson announced with joy.

Just weeks prior, Galentine was struggling in the snow to keep her puppies safe. Now, she was cherished by her new family, marking a complete turnaround in her life.
As Galentine settled into her new home, the SRSL team remained hopeful that her puppies would soon find loving families too. Meanwhile, they continue to celebrate the successful rescue of Galentine and her puppies.

“At 2 years old, Galentine is just a baby herself,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “Never again will she be lonely, cold, frightened, or hungry. She’s ready to receive respect and give so much love in return. She matters.”
