No dog should have to experience sadness, especially the kind of ordeal faced by a brave mother dog named Mama Evelyn.
Abandoned on the side of a road, she cradled her newborn puppies, shielding them the best she could while hoping for rescue.
On her way to Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) where she serves as board president, Valerie Hicks noticed something unusual on the roadside—a dog curled up in an open crate.

Upon closer inspection, she found Evelyn with her seven newborn pups huddling for warmth and comfort. Tragically, an eighth puppy had not survived.
Heartbroken by the sight, Hicks reached out to a fellow rescuer, Christina, and gently comforted the anxious mother dog.
Despite her nervousness, Evelyn gradually sensed that they were there to help her. “Mom was very nervous, maybe the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. But at the same time, she seemed very grateful,” Hicks shared with The Dodo.

Evelyn and her puppies were brought to CARA, where they were provided a tranquil place to rest and recover. Before long, a dedicated foster family welcomed the dog family, with Mama Evelyn tirelessly caring for her little ones.
CARA shared on Facebook, “This girl is one of the best moms ever. The puppies are pretty robust and seem healthy, and they nurse almost constantly. When not nursing, they are in complete milk comas.”
Although the experience made Evelyn wary of humans, the kindness and patience from her foster home slowly rebuilt her trust. As she settled in, her warm and gentle demeanor began to shine.

The shelter celebrated the puppies’ steady progress, as they thrived under their mother’s care. Soon, the little family will travel to a foster-based rescue partner in Maine, where they’ll seek loving forever homes.
May Mama Evelyn and her pups find families who cherish them and never abandon them again.
