On a dreary, wet day in New York, Officer Michael Pascale’s actions transformed him into a hero—not just due to his official duties but because of a touching rescue.
While on a routine patrol in a public park, Pascale encountered a small black dog named Joey, surrounded by discarded needles and broken beer bottles.
Joey was in a heart-wrenching condition. He was tied to a fence with a heavy chain, drenched from the rain, visibly trembling, and appeared utterly despondent.

Seeing the sadness in Joey’s eyes struck a chord with Officer Pascale, prompting him to take immediate action.
“The first thought I had was that I needed to get him out of here,” Pascale told The Dodo. This marked the beginning of a heartfelt journey of rescue and adoption that would forever change both their lives.
Pascale quickly brought Joey to the Animal Care Centers of NYC in Brooklyn. While drying the grateful dog with a towel, a special bond began to form. To Pascale, Joey was more than just an animal—he was a soul in need.

“I don’t see just an animal,” Pascale emphasized. “I see a soul. And that’s something I can’t ignore.”
He sent a picture of the drenched pup to his wife, who eagerly replied, “Bring him home!” The couple was ready to welcome Joey into their family; however, there was a process to adhere to.
Animal Care Centers required that Joey undergo a mandatory 72-hour holding period. This waiting time ensures that only neglected or abandoned animals are given a chance for a new home.

Despite their eagerness to adopt Joey, Pascale and his wife understood the necessity of this regulation.
Throughout those 72 hours, Officer Pascale visited Joey daily, strengthening their bond even further. Once the waiting period ended, Pascale fulfilled his promise, adopting Joey and vowing to protect him from any future neglect.

Joey quickly transformed from a soggy stray into a cherished family member, showered with love and affection. His gratitude was evident as he returned home, ready to embark on a new chapter alongside the Pascales.
Now, Joey enjoys exploring the city with his dad and snuggling on the couch with his mom. Officer Pascale humorously notes that Joey has become quite the “mommy’s boy.”

Even though Joey isn’t flawless (he occasionally rummages through the trash and prefers to avoid the rain), he is content and adored.
Ultimately, all Joey longed for was a home filled with love, and thanks to Officer Pascale’s compassion, he found just that.
Joey’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible bonds that can form between humans and animals and the transformative impact of kindness and rescue.
