In the heart of a forest in Mississippi, a frail Pitbull named Halo lay curled up, seemingly trying to vanish into her surroundings. Initially believed to be an aggressive dog hiding away, the reality was far more heartbreaking.

When rescue workers arrived, they discovered a dog who was anything but aggressive. Halo was blind, severely malnourished, and so weak she likely wouldn’t have survived much longer without intervention.

Stacey and her husband, Mike, long-time animal rescuers in Mississippi, took on Halo’s case. They are well-known in the area, particularly through their involvement with Lucky Dog Refuge. Halo quickly became one of their most memorable rescues.

Upon approaching the dog, Stacey and Mike were met with the tragic sight of her ribs jutting out from her emaciated body. Gently, they coaxed her with food to emerge from hiding, but it was clear she had been neglected for a long time.

Halo’s physical state hinted at years of deprivation, possibly having been used for breeding before being abandoned.

“Her ears were cut with scissors, and her eyes were damaged—one blind from disease that went untreated,” Stacey Frazier shared on Facebook.

Despite her traumatic past, a new journey began for Halo. Unsure of her survival at first, they named her Halo and brought her home.

Stacey nursed her with antibiotics for her infections and gradually introduced her to nourishing meals. Although there were moments of uncertainty, Halo showed tremendous strength.

“We were uncertain about her eyesight until the doctor confirmed her blindness, though she might see shadows,” Jessica from Lucky Dog Refuge told The Dodo. Yet, under Stacey’s care, Halo learned to relax, wag her tail, and trust once more.

After several months of recovery, Halo traveled to Connecticut to continue her journey at the rescue’s facility. Here, the once-wilted dog thrived, delighting in treats like ice cream and bringing joy to the staff with her newfound zest for life.

“Halo lets us know every day how grateful she is for everything she has now. She’s truly an angel,” said Jessica. Even so, Halo’s journey wasn’t over until she found a forever home.
