When Grace was given up by her previous owners due to the high cost of her medical care, she faced an uncertain future. This young pup, suffering from a mysterious illness, needed more than just a home; she needed a family willing to uncover the cause of her health issues.
Fortunately, Grace’s fortune changed when The Animal Pad, a non-profit dog rescue organization in San Diego, California, stepped in and connected her with the perfect family eager to provide the love and attention she desperately needed.
Her first night in her new home wasn’t easy. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces, Grace had little energy and often wrapped herself in blankets, signaling to her new caretakers that something was wrong. “We were up throughout the night with her, she was incredibly underweight,” her new owner, Katie, shared with The Dodo.
Despite their attempts, Grace showed little interest in food. However, each time she managed to eat even a small amount, it was an occasion for celebration. Her family encouraged her tirelessly, hoping each success would lead to more progress. “Whenever she would wag her tail, which was rare, she just made our day,” Katie remarked.
Under the cloud of uncertainty, Grace slowly started to thrive in her nurturing environment. Her health improved, and her playful spirit began to shine through. Initially, she could only manage playing while lying down. But with constant motivation from her family, Grace eventually found herself running around once more.
Throughout this journey, regular vet visits were crucial as everyone was committed to discovering the root of her health issues. Countless tests finally unveiled that Grace hadn’t been vaccinated by her breeders and was suffering from distemper, a severe neurological disease.
Although Grace’s health has now significantly improved, the neglect she experienced will leave her with lifelong effects. “She has a little bobbing, ticking head that is pretty constant, and she’ll live with that,” Katie explained.
As Grace blossomed, her foster family found they couldn’t imagine parting with her. “We really went through something together. Me and my family were by her side getting her through these lows. So, seeing her just be a happy dog full of life now is incredibly rewarding, and I just adore her,” said Katie.
Adopting Grace turned out to be the best decision for her family. Today, she relishes her life filled with love, engaging playdates, cozy naps, and delightful treats. For Grace, it’s a perfect life with the perfect family. What more could a pup wish for?
