Life for some dogs can be rough, especially for the smallest among them. It’s heart-wrenching to think about how much suffering can be endured by a creature so small.

Chico, a Chihuahua found in a trailer park in rural North Carolina, knew this hardship all too well. He was discovered in a frail state, tethered to an old trampoline with a bungee cord, and had been left with barely any food or water.

Throughout his life, Chico held onto hope that one day someone would show him kindness and give him the opportunity he longed for. At last, that day arrived when help appeared just in time.

For months, Chico had been striving to survive. So when PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) workers from Norfolk, Virginia, saw him tied to the trampoline, they knew they had to act.

“Fieldworkers encountered the Chihuahua tied to a trampoline with just 2 feet of tangled tether to move, half-starved, and without water,” PETA reported on their website.

Jake Roos, one of the fieldworkers, along with his team, carefully replaced the cord with a proper collar and gave Chico food, water, and necessary medical attention.

Five months later, the team met Chico again, and this time, the owner agreed to let them find him a better home.

Chico was immediately placed in a foster home where he received medical care and was surrounded by the love he had missed out on for so long.

Initially, he was shy and hesitant, flinching at the slightest touch. But once Chico felt secure and loved, his personality transformed significantly.

He became affectionate and cherished every moment with his foster family.

“His foster guardian says the gentle guy is ‘the best kind of friend’ and ‘full of heart.’ He adores treats, especially if they’re pumpkin flavored,” the Virginia-based animal rights group shared.

In just a few weeks, Chico made a full recovery.

His eyes shone brighter, his coat became lush, and his appetite returned with vigor. Chico loved curling up next to humans and enjoyed spending time indoors. But most importantly, he treasured his newfound freedom.

After a long journey of recovery, Chico received the best news: he was adopted into a loving home with a retired woman, and he is happier than ever.
