In many households, dogs are treated as cherished family members. However, some unfortunate dogs experience terrible mistreatment. Cala, a guard dog for a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica, was one such canine. Her owner subjected her to severe neglect, chaining her with a leash so short that she struggled to breathe and was unable to rest properly. Despite being sick, she never received vet care and was rarely fed. Cala’s story fortunately took a turn for the better when her plight was finally addressed.
Neighbors, troubled by her dire living conditions, reported them to the police and the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates. Cala was rescued from her miserable state, found to be severely undernourished and covered with wounds from years of neglect.
Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, shared with The Dodo that the first image she saw of Cala was heartbreaking, depicting a dog that had lost its spirit and was longing for relief. The journey to healing was not easy, as Cala had to endure painful treatment for wounds, including a severe neck injury from being chained for so long.
Even after being saved, Cala faced another tragedy when intruders attempted to poison the dogs at the shelter with tainted sausages. While the incident claimed the lives of 16 dogs, Cala miraculously survived, aided by her size and sheer resilience, though she did experience some transient neurological issues.
Today, Cala is flourishing with a foster family, learning to trust both humans and other dogs. “After enduring years of neglect and suffering, she is relishing her freedom, displaying a spirited and sometimes stubborn personality,” said Battle. “This rescue has been a testament to the triumph of good over evil, and ultimately, love has prevailed.”
Territorio de Zaguates continues to rescue and provide sanctuary to hundreds of homeless dogs in Costa Rica, giving each one the opportunity to be loved and socialized within a community. Cala’s incredible transformation is a testament to the power of compassion and the enduring resilience of the spirit.
