In spring 2024, Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) received a call that struck them to the core—a dog injured and tied to a fence needed their urgent help. The team, concerned from the outset, was not prepared for what they discovered upon arrival.
Upon reaching the site, the volunteers found a dog whose appearance was drastically different from any they had seen before. Marco, as he was later named, was in a dire state, and his suffering was visible. “His face had swollen to about five times its normal size,” SRSL shared in a Facebook post. The rescue team acted swiftly, shocked by Marco’s condition as he had been left unattended under the sun, fighting to stay alive.
Despite finding relief in seeing the rescue team, Marco could not hide his pain. “His entire body was filled with infection,” SRSL explained. The team reassured him to hold on and fight for his life.
Once freed from the fence, Marco was carefully taken to SRSL’s animal hospital. His road to recovery was uncertain. He arrived at the clinic in septic shock, requiring extensive treatment, including IVs, antibiotics, and other medications for months.
The origin of Marco’s plight remains a mystery, but evidence hinted at his past in dog fighting. Despite what he had endured, Marco was gentle and showed nothing but gratitude towards his rescuers. “The most amazing part is he still loves and trusts humans,” SRSL noted.
With time, Marco healed fully. The loving and spirited dog emerged from his trials, no longer the swollen, unrecognizable pup he once was. Once strong enough, Marco moved into foster care, where he found an adoring temporary mom, Katie. Captivated by his charm, Katie adopted him, giving him a forever home.
Marco now thrives in his new life, surrounded by a loving family, including other dogs saved by SRSL. His troubled past is a distant memory as he enjoys his spoiled existence. Katie wrote to SRSL, saying, “Marco is spoiled rotten—really rotten. He has a huge personality and is the perfect mix of silly, sweet, smart, and protective.”
From playful antics like blanket-stealing at bedtime to keeping an eye on the neighborhood from a favorite window, Marco’s days are filled with joy. His family treasures him immensely. “He’s still the cutest little man with his head tilts,” Katie said on SRSL’s Facebook page. “We love our baby boy, Marco!”
