When a newborn puppy named Matilda lost three legs the night she entered the world, it seemed she wouldn’t survive. However, her incredible spirit and distinctive way of moving soon proved otherwise.
Matilda’s story began on the night she was born, alongside two siblings. Unfortunately, a tragic incident left her with two missing front legs, a partially missing back leg, and only one fully functioning leg.

The rescuer, a seasoned expert in animal welfare, responded immediately. Matilda was quickly taken under their care and rushed to a veterinary clinic. Given the severe nature of her injuries, the medical staff held little hope for her survival. The prospect of raising a puppy with such significant physical challenges was daunting, and the rescuer faced many questions about the future. Yet, they remained resolved, taking each day as it came.
Despite the grim prognosis, Matilda’s unyielding spirit shone through. Her caretaker marveled at her resilience as she grew stronger, tackling every challenge with an enthusiasm rarely seen in newborn puppies. It became evident that Matilda didn’t perceive herself as different from other dogs.
Eager to enhance her mobility, a local company generously offered to help. They crafted a custom 3D-printed cart tailored to Matilda’s needs. The rescue team hoped this would enable her to run freely. However, Matilda adamantly rejected the cart, refusing to use it.
Instead, Matilda charted her own path. She devised a charming way of moving, hopping around using her one full leg and partial limbs, which suited her perfectly. Her caretaker decided not to interfere, allowing Matilda to bounce and explore as she pleased.
To ensure her safety, her family made significant alterations to their home. Every room was equipped with thick padding and mats to protect her as she hopped, preventing any injury.
Today, Matilda is a lively and friendly dog, unafraid of anything. She eagerly approaches visitors, asking for belly rubs with her head bowed and her hindquarters in the air. Her vibrant personality was evident when she barked during her rescuer’s interview, demanding attention and a spot on their lap.
Matilda’s journey is a heartwarming tale of resilience and the remarkable tenacity of animals given a chance to thrive.
