For Donna Lochmann, who spends her days rescuing animals with Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri, mornings start with urgent calls that require both bravery and compassion. On one particular morning, armed with determination, she prepared to respond to a medical emergency.
“There’s a dog in need of help!” Donna exclaimed upon receiving the call.

Joining her was Natalie Thompson, a dedicated colleague. Together, they headed out, not realizing that their day was about to take an unexpected turn.
As they drove to their assignment, Natalie suddenly asked Donna to slow the vehicle.
“I noticed something small and brown on a side street,” Donna described to Natalie. “It looked like it could be another dog needing assistance.”
Natalie agreed, but they decided to first complete their current mission. After handling the medical emergency, they returned to find the mysterious puppy.

However, upon their return, the puppy was nowhere to be seen.
“At that moment, I felt crushed,” Natalie later revealed. But she didn’t lose hope. Driven by intuition, she searched nearby alleys and soon spotted a skinny, scared dog ducking into a dilapidated, multi-story building.
The building was dark and unsafe, but Natalie pushed on. Climbing the shaky stairs, she discovered the heartbreaking sight that brought tears to her eyes.
The tiny dog lay wrapped in a filthy old blanket, desperately attempting to stay warm in the cold, crumbling surroundings she called home.

Natalie reached for her slip lead, only to find she didn’t have it.
“We only had one, and it was on the dog in the Jeep,” Donna explained.
Fearing the pup would disappear, Natalie rushed back to the vehicle. When she returned, the blanket was deserted. But outside, the dog sat in an open field.
Crouching down, Natalie offered Vienna sausages. The gesture won the pup’s trust.

Enchanted by her delicate, doll-like appearance, Natalie named her Dodie. With gentle care, she secured the leash around Dodie and coaxed her to the Jeep.
“This is often the hardest part because many dogs are so frightened. But Dodie was exceptional,” Natalie said.
At the veterinarian’s office, Dodie bravely underwent tests. Though she was underweight, her health was better than anticipated. A special feeding plan was arranged, involving small meals to help her regain strength.
Now settled in a foster home, Dodie enjoys her days wrapped not in a grimy blanket, but surrounded by warmth, comfort, and affection.
Her foster mom, Nicolina, alongside devoted volunteers, provides Dodie with the love she has always deserved.
