Animals have a special way of bringing light and joy into our lives, often becoming beloved family members due to their unwavering loyalty and companionship.

Unfortunately, many animals experience suffering, with countless dogs roaming the streets alone and uncared for. However, stories occasionally emerge that remind us of the power of kindness and compassion.

One hot summer day, Rosa María Segura Alcántar and her husband, Erick, were traveling on a busy highway when they noticed something unusual in front of them.

“She looked confused, dehydrated, and malnourished,” Rosa shared with The Dodo. “We stopped, and she started coming towards us.”

Erick waited for a gap in the traffic before safely crossing the road. Once on the other side, he gently picked up the trembling dog and carried her back to their vehicle.

As they spent some time with her, Rosa and Erick noticed an old wound around her neck, indicating that she may have been tied up before being abandoned.

While it was unclear what hardships she had faced, the critical thing was that she was now safe. The little dog was no longer alone.

What Manzana didn’t realize was that she had been rescued by two devoted individuals committed to saving animals. Rosa and Erick operate Refugio Xollin, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, healing, and rehoming numerous dogs in need.

“We feel relieved to have Manzana with us. She would have died out there, either hit by a car or from a lack of food and water,” Rosa expressed.

“She’s already gained weight since her rescue. She is not aggressive at all. She is very calm, loving, caring, and gets along with other dogs. Her little eyes are shining,” Rosa noted.

With a brighter future ahead, Manzana’s days of hardship are now behind her, and soon she will find a home where she is cherished as she should be.
