Every day in animal shelters, dogs patiently wait for a loving family to welcome them into their lives. With hopeful eyes, they yearn for kindness and a chance to experience a warm and nurturing home.
Unfortunately, many of these dogs have faced difficult pasts and need time to rebuild their trust in humans.
One such dog, named Pepperoni Pizza Slice, resides at the Watauga Humane Society in Boone, North Carolina. He knows all too well what it’s like to want comfort and safety after enduring hardship.

Pepperoni’s journey to the shelter was a painful one. Abandoned and tied to a tree in the woods without food or water, he was left alone with no explanation.
Since that day, more than 160 days have passed, and Pepperoni is still waiting for someone to offer him a loving forever home.
Initially scared and isolated, Pepperoni waited in those woods, hoping for rescue. Eventually, help arrived, and the staff at the Watauga Humane Society welcomed him with open arms, offering him the care and affection he desperately needed.
Adjusting to the shelter was challenging for Pepperoni. The new environment and unfamiliar faces made him anxious. However, as time went on, it became clear that beneath his timid exterior was a gentle and affectionate dog.

In an interview, a representative from the shelter described him as “honestly a really good boy.” Those who have spent time with him have noticed his eyes light up when recognizing familiar faces and his tail wagging when he feels secure.
Pepperoni requires a home without other pets or young children, where he can continue to grow and thrive at his own pace.
He has been a resident at the shelter since May 2025, making daily progress with the support of the staff. He’s learned to walk on a leash, follow commands, and even become more at ease with muzzle training.
Despite these advancements, Pepperoni’s journey to finding a new home has been slow. While his specific needs make adoption more challenging, the shelter remains optimistic.

They believe that someone special will recognize his worth and be willing to make the commitment he needs.
The shelter has shared in a post that adopting Pepperoni “won’t happen overnight.”
They emphasize the importance of patience and understanding, hoping to find someone who appreciates the difficult, yet rewarding, path to earning Pepperoni’s trust. Such a person might just find in Pepperoni a companion like no other.
Pepperoni continues to wait for the right person to see him for who he truly is, eager to show that he can be a loyal friend, deserving of love and a sense of safety.
Once he finds his forever home, he hopes to rest easy, knowing he’ll never be abandoned again.
