It’s hard to think about, but some dogs face rejection and abandonment by the people they love the most.
Dogs are known for their unconditional loyalty, so when their trust is broken, they become frightened and bewildered, wondering why their owners no longer care for them.
Such was the case for a little dog named Red Vern, who was left tied to a tree in the woods by his owners.
Thankfully, Red Vern’s tale took a more hopeful turn.
A group of children exploring the area near their apartment heard faint whimpers. Curiosity piqued, they followed the sounds and discovered a small dog with a red collar tied to a bamboo tree.
The dog, visibly trembling, had no food or water and was so thin that his ribcage showed. He was also missing one eye.
Feeling a mix of heartbreak and confusion, Red Vern didn’t understand the abandonment. He hadn’t done anything to deserve such a fate.
The children ran to get help, but with animal control unable to respond until Monday, hope seemed distant.
Fortuitously, local rescuer Keri Bullock Toth heard about the situation and hurried to assist, bringing friends along. Toth’s friend approached Red Vern cautiously, noting his confused but non-aggressive demeanor.
Offering food, she gained his trust, and soon broke the bamboo sealing his fate, freeing Red Vern. Nervously, but instinctively sensing the help being offered, Red Vern allowed himself to be rescued.
That night, despite limited resources and no space, Toth took Red Vern home, aware of his urgent need for care. The next day, she reached out to Denise Gutnisky, founder of Mardi Paws, who promptly agreed to cover the dog’s medical expenses.
Red Vern received comprehensive treatment, including vaccinations, antibiotics, and stitches for his eye. Despite his ordeal, Red Vern remained gentle and patient, showing only slight flinching when touched on his blind side, yet always trying to trust.
Red Vern is now staying with a foster family, learning to shed his fears. Enjoying their affection, he loves nothing more than curling up in their laps. His foster family notes that he would cuddle all day if he could.
Once his heartworm treatment is complete, Red Vern will join his forever family, who have already applied to adopt him. Soon, he will experience the loving life he deserves from people who truly care.
Red Vern’s journey is a testament to the power of kindness and compassion, showing that they can transform despair into hope. This once-lost pup now has a promising future filled with love and care.
