Many animals often get overlooked simply because they don’t fit the typical picture of an ideal pet. While stories of puppies triumphing over adversity are heartwarming, fewer people are willing to adopt those that look different or need extra care.
For some, the additional care these animals require might be a financial burden. Yet, in many instances, it boils down to personal choice.
Every dog, regardless of their appearance or needs, deserves a loving home, and the gratitude they offer is invaluable.

This narrative focuses on two tiny puppies born with cleft palates who defied the odds to find safety, love, and a chance to flourish.
Veterinary staff in California noticed something unusual when they examined a pair of French Bulldog siblings—they both had cleft palates.
The team realized that finding permanent homes for these pups would be challenging. But they also knew someone experienced in nurturing animals with special needs.

They reached out to Kelly Sayer, a devoted volunteer with a history of fostering puppies with medical requirements. Without hesitation, Kelly welcomed the pair into her home and named them Violet and Dash.
From the start, Kelly saw how delicate and small they were. The challenges ahead were clear.
Further tests showed that Violet had a cleft lip and a partial cleft palate, while Dash had a cleft lip and a complete cleft palate.

Fortunately, Kelly was well-equipped for the task. Her background in fostering cleft palate puppies meant Violet and Dash were in excellent hands.
For Kelly, this mission held even more significance because her own son, Landon, was born with a cleft palate. Together, they embraced the pups with as much love and care as they would any family member.
The first few days required round-the-clock care, but neither Kelly nor Landon faltered.

Feeding was initially a struggle, yet with patience and perseverance, the puppies gradually learned to eat independently.
Kelly knew it would take time before Violet and Dash could be put up for adoption. Many cleft palate puppies unfortunately end up abandoned because their needs can be daunting for prospective adopters.
This reality didn’t deter her. Her commitment to finding the perfect home for each dog she fosters is unwavering.

Kelly also speaks out against unethical breeding practices.
In an interview with The Dodo, she criticized how breeding has led to health issues in dogs, stating, “We’ve changed the breed so much over the years… they have all these problems that it’s hard to see that being ethical.”
Despite the challenges, Violet and Dash have grown stronger each day. Their transformation over three months has been both remarkable and inspiring.
Kelly hopes that soon they will find their forever homes. Until then, she continues to nurture them with dedication. Watching them thrive is a testament to the extraordinary power of compassion.
