While traveling in Crete, Greece, Kiara Ijzendoorn and her family encountered a heart-wrenching scene that would change their lives. They spotted a dog lying motionless on the road, barely able to move.
Kiara explained to The Dodo, “His leg was totally paralyzed. He had a big bump on his back that was his broken spine.”
Concerned for the dog’s wellbeing, the family stopped their car, and Kiara discovered that the dog had been living in a barn nearby, completely on his own.

The sight of the injured and neglected animal pulled at her heartstrings. Driven by compassion, Kiara was determined to help the dog.
Over the next few days, Kiara repeatedly visited the barn to care for the dog, whom she affectionately named Fos, meaning “shining” in Greek.
Each visit brought Fos joy and comfort, even in the face of his painful injuries. Recognizing his affectionate nature, Kiara knew she couldn’t leave him behind.

Kiara stepped up and took Fos to a local rescue organization, where she adopted him. A veterinarian examined him, confirming signs of possible abuse, and began treating his injuries.
Before long, Fos was on a plane heading to Holland with Kiara and her family, ready to start a new chapter in his life.

Now, Fos is on the road to recovery from his broken spine. “He walks better now and his bump isn’t as big,” Kiara shared. Despite lingering fears of older men and some cats, Fos is thriving in his new environment.
Kiara’s decision to stop that day on the road potentially saved Fos’s life and brought an unexpected best friend into hers, illustrating how acts of kindness can forge connections that profoundly impact lives.
