In an uplifting story from Woburn, Massachusetts, an 11-year-old girl has overcome significant physical challenges with the help of a Great Dane named George.
Bella Burton, who has Morquio Syndrome—a rare genetic disorder affecting bone development and mobility—has taken her first steps in nine years, without the use of crutches or a wheelchair, thanks to her loyal service dog.
George was trained at the Service Dog Project in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and is now Bella’s constant companion. Although they are the same height, George weighs three times as much as Bella, providing the stable support she needs.
The Service Dog Project has placed nearly 100 Great Danes with individuals facing severe balance and mobility issues, greatly enhancing their quality of life.
The program benefits a wide range of people including military veterans, children, and individuals with conditions like multiple sclerosis and Friedreich’s ataxia. Each dog is trained to meet the specific needs of its handler.
For Bella, George has not only boosted her mobility but also her spirits, more effectively than any previous therapy.
Morquio Syndrome, the rare metabolic disorder that Bella faces, affects only about 3,000 people globally. It leads to dwarfism, poor bone development, and potential organ damage.
Bella shared with WCVB News her journey from using wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches to relying solely on George for assistance. She explained how she can lean on him while navigating her school’s hallways and stairs.
Bella described to Fox News how George acts as a reliable crutch for her. “I use him as a crutch,” she said. If she ever falls, she instructs George to “Brace!” allowing her to get back on her feet with his help.
Thanks to George, Bella now enjoys a more active lifestyle, including playing on playgrounds and bike rides. He offers constant support, even sleeping nearby to ensure her safety.
Their heartwarming partnership has captivated audiences worldwide, with many following their journey online.
In recognition of his exceptional service, George is set to receive the Award for Canine Excellence from the American Kennel Club in December. He is one of five dogs honored for making a significant impact on their owners and communities.
