An urgent call from a school security team led to the discovery of a severely distressed dog trapped in a sewer. For several days, the poor animal had been left there, ignored by those who passed by, worsening to a critical condition.
The security guard who contacted us revealed that a troubled individual had cruelly thrown the dog into the sewer, possibly as a test of human empathy.
What awaited us upon arrival was a heartbreaking sight: a severely malnourished dog, barely clinging to life.
The rescue efforts required significant exertion, as the animal lay in a locked sewer, trembling and cold. Quickly wrapping him in a warm blanket, we rushed him to the nearest veterinary clinic with urgency, fearing that his time was limited.
When we lifted him, it was alarming to discover he weighed only 13 kilograms, his bones jutting through his skin. The veterinarian, while keeping hope alive, faced a daunting task.
The dog’s eyes reflected a profound weariness, yet he still managed to acknowledge our presence with a gentle movement of his head.
His physical state was harrowing; his neck carried scars from his ordeal, and his body was afflicted with ulcers and parasites. In addition, severe anemia plagued him, necessitating numerous blood transfusions and round-the-clock care.
Despite intense efforts to stabilize him, his condition rapidly declined, with seizures confirming the severity of his plight.
A few days into this struggle, the veterinary team made the compassionate decision to prevent further suffering by gently letting him go.
The decision to part was heart-wrenching, but ultimately it granted Mate, as he was lovingly named, a dignified end. In those final moments, enveloped by warmth and affection, he found a peaceful escape from his previous torment.
Mate’s departure leaves an indelible sense of sadness and void. Yet, within this sorrow, there is solace in knowing that during his last days, he knew kindness and care. Farewell, Mate. May you rest in serenity, free from past suffering.
